In the remote Pasvik valley of Finnmark, Norway's easternmost region, a small and fragile population of brown bears (Ursus arctos) ekes out an existence along the border with Russia. Unlike the larger, more stable bear populations in Sweden or Finland, Norway's bears are largely transient males that wander in from the vast Russian forests to the east. Here, in the taiga and river valleys, they live on the edge of their species' range, their presence a testament to the wildness of this northern frontier.
A Borderland Population
The brown bears of Pasvik are part of a larger population that thrives in the forests of northwestern Russia and Finland. In Norway, however, the resident population is tiny and vulnerable. Most of the bears detected in the Pasvik valley are young males that disperse from their natal areas in Russia, seeking new territories. They cross the border into Norway, but often do not stay permanently, returning to the more extensive wilderness on the Russian side.
This makes the Norwegian population particularly fragile. Without a steady influx of bears from the east, the Norwegian segment would likely disappear. The bears that do remain are few, and their future depends on cross-border cooperation and the preservation of habitat corridors that allow movement between the two countries.
Life in the Taiga and River Valleys
The Pasvik valley is characterized by boreal forest, or taiga, with Scots pine and birch dominating the landscape. The Pasvik River, which flows through the valley, creates a lush corridor of vegetation, attracting bears with abundant food sources. Here, bears forage on berries, roots, and insects, and occasionally prey on moose calves or reindeer. The river itself provides a rich supply of fish, particularly during the salmon spawning season.
Bears in this region are typically active from April to October, spending the long winter months in dens dug into the ground or beneath tree roots. The short, intense northern summer is a time of frantic feeding, as bears must accumulate enough fat to survive the winter and, for females, to support their cubs.
Monitoring Through DNA
Because bears are elusive and live in low densities, researchers rely on non-invasive methods to study them. Rovdata, the Norwegian national database for wildlife monitoring, uses DNA analysis of hair and scat samples to identify individual bears. Hair snags, which consist of barbed wire placed around a scent lure, and systematic scat surveys provide valuable genetic material without disturbing the animals.
This DNA monitoring has revealed the population's structure and movements. By identifying individual bears, researchers can estimate population size, track migration patterns, and understand how bears use the landscape. The data show that most bears detected in Norway are males, with few resident females, highlighting the population's vulnerability. Long-term monitoring is essential to detect changes and inform management decisions.
Conservation and Coexistence
The brown bear is a protected species in Norway, but its presence in the Pasvik region is a source of both pride and conflict. Local livestock, particularly sheep and reindeer, can be vulnerable to bear predation, leading to tensions between conservation and economic interests. Compensation schemes and preventive measures, such as electric fencing and proper carcass disposal, are used to mitigate conflicts.
Cross-border cooperation with Russia and Finland is crucial for the long-term survival of the Pasvik bears. The bears do not recognize national boundaries, and their conservation requires a coordinated approach. By maintaining habitat connectivity and reducing human-caused mortality, Norway can help ensure that the brown bear remains a part of the northern wilderness for generations to come.
